Outback is of course a chain, so if you've been in one Outback, you probably know what to expect here. The place is family friendly although a bit more 'fine dining' than many family restaurants around. The price is a bit higher than you would expect typically. But it is REALLY worth it. We have gone to this Outback many, many times, and each time it's a treat.
The restaurant is in a mall off the main area of Auburn, so it might take a bit of effort to find it. There's usually a wait, and even if you call-ahead, you still might have to wait 1/2 hr or more when you get there. There isn't much of a waiting area, which makes this a bit rough. But again, it's worth sticking it out.
The atmosphere is friendly-pub, with comfy booths and large TVs around for those who want to keep track of sports. The bar area in the center is usually full but not overly loud. The waitstaff has got to be some of the friendliest we've ever dealt with, always willing to go the extra mile and to keep an eye on you.
The place has primarily steaks, seafood, and some salads. Our traditional order is of swordfish or mahi mahi for me, steak for him, and a pair of salads. They serve this really delicious, warm brown bread on a big wooden serving board. Being low carbers we try to resist this most of the time, but sometimes we do give in.
The food is always quite well prepared, and the one time that my fish was a bit slow in coming out, they apologized profusely and made sure we knew about its progress. The salads are always fresh and flavorful, with very nice looking greens, cukes and tomatoes. The wine selection is nice, and they do a good job refilling on the waters.
This is really a great place for eating healthily. You can get grilled fish with a side of veggies and they understand completely if you want to avoid carbs, fats, or anything else. The salads are just so tasty. I really can't say enough good things about this restaurant. My only gripe is that initial waiting time - if only they could just take reservations! Or if they can't do that, why not expand the restaurant a bit, or at least create a larger waiting area? Still, even given that problem, we happily wait all the time, because the service, atmosphere and food are really worth it.
