Dirty Water - The Standells Probably THE most famous song about Boston, this has the chorus, "Oh, I love that dirty water, oh, Boston you´re my home". The dirty water in question is the Charles River, not always known for its cleanliness.
There are all sorts of great lines in the song. One is about "frustrated women have to be in by 12 o'clock. And I'm wishin' and a hopin' that just once those doors weren't locked." Back in the "old days", females who lived in dorms were locked in at a curfew time to keep them safe! I told that to my young half-sister and she couldn't believe it. How times change ...
The song is sung by the Standells, but was given to them by their producer, Ed Cobb. The band didn't even want to do the song at first!
Formed in 1962, the Standells came up with their name while standing around waiting for work! They only made 5 albums, and Dirty Water is perhaps their best known. It's a true classic in Massachusetts.
