If you want to visit a spooky cemetery, you definitely want to go to the Spider Gate Cemetery, in Leicester, Massachusetts. This is technically the "Friends Cemetery" and is run by Quakers. One look at the entry gates and you can see why they call this either Spider Gate or Spider Gates. There are three separate gate pieces which all have this spider-web pattern on them.
The Spider Gate Cemetery was originally founded in 1740, while the beautiful iron gates date to 1895.
Click on the below map to get a better view of it. What you want to do is get to where Route 56 intersects with Manville street, in the top left. Then drive south on Manville to the green dot, right after the "St." on the map. That is where you park. THERE IS NO SIGN. There is no indication at all that you're in the right location.
On the eastern side of the road you will see a yellow "do not enter" triangular bar marked with a red tag that says "KB35". That is how you know you're in the right place. There are NO houses anywhere near here, so you can't put in a house number to get you close.
There's a small parking area across from this yellow gate. Park there. Then head into the forest to the east, down the dirt road. It is maybe a 5 minute walk, a fairly well kept (but dirt) road, so quite doable for most people. Note that there are "no tresspassing" signs but those are telling you to stay on the road. It is fine to be on the dirt road. You just can't go off into the woods.
You'll cross a small stream (on a bridge) and then on the right you'll find the cemetery.
Here's a view of the front with all three gates.
The cemetery is fairly sparsely populated, as far as cemeteries go, with plenty of room for growth. This is a view from the center of the cemetery, inside it, looking back at those spider gates. There are woods all around.
Here's a collection of photos I took there on my visit. Please ask me for permission before you use any of these. Click on any photo to see a larger version. These are shown in the order I took them, so they show the area at the parking area first, and then the walk in to the cemetery, and then the Spider Gates Cemetery itself.
